IMPORTANT BRIDGE PLATE NEWS! As you are aware, the Specially Equipped Freight Car Committee (SEFCC) made revisions to the AAR Bridge Plate Specification M-951 to require a stronger plate yet requiring the weigh not to exceed 40 pounds. The result of this is that there are not enough bridge plates being produced and made available to serve the industry. There are many automotive facilities that are in desperate need of plates. In order to serve the industry and help make bridge plates available, the SEFCC has taken action to allow sale and distribution of bridge plates built to the previous specification until December 1, 2005. The previous specification allowed for a 1,500 pound wheel load with a 3:1 safety factor instead of the current 3, 600 pound wheel load. Please note that this is not a change in the specification to revert back to the previous specification. The current specification M-951 remains intact as written. This action is only to serve as a waiver to allow plates of the original design that had previously been approved to be made available to the industry.
